LeWana Clark, CSC, CI, CT, SC:L, is a bi-state resident of Colorado and Massachusetts: living in a home facing the front range of the winter Rocky Mountains with her life partner, BJ Wood, and in a home on the cape of Massachusetts. She grew up in Amarillo, Texas and at the tender age of 10 began taking her first sign language class. Her early interpreter training came from a phenomenal mentor and members of the Deaf community because Interpreter Training/Preparation Programs were few and far between in the early 1970s. By the time she turned 20, she was nationally certified with her CSC. She then graduated from the University of Texas, Austin (hook 'em horns!) with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a focus in Management. And over the last 26 years, she has also achieved her RID certifications of Certificate of Interpretation, Certificate of Transliteration, and Specialty Certificate: Legal. Adding to her accomplishments, she completed the Master Mentorship Program at Northeastern University in April 2005. She is now taking coursework towards her Master's degree at both Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts and at the University of Northern Colorado, DOIT Center, Denver, Colorado.
LeWana is actively involved in the Deaf and Interpreter communities. She currently is a national, Massachusetts and Colorado member of Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and a national, Massachusetts and Colorado member of the National Association of the Deaf, is the co-founder of Allies Colorado, interprets for community and legal assignments as well as for VRS, teaches at the Interpreter Preparation Program at Front Range Community College, designs curriculum and teaches for the Interpreter Paradigm Training Series with DOVE: Advocacy Services for Abused Deaf Women and Children, and is working with a couple of states on training topics, minimum credentials, mentoring requirements and standards of excellence for interpreters working in court and legal settings.
